Marcum Ailing, Germen Up, Lutz Down

According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, the Mets are considering whether or not to place starting pitcher Shaun Marcum on the disabled list.

Gonzalez Germen was flown from AAA Las Vegas to New York, and it was initially thought that he would be activated in the event Marcum landed on the DL.  However, the Mets have instead optioned infielder Zach Lutz to AAA Las Vegas to make room for Germen on the roster.

If Marcum lands on the DL, he would likely be replaced by Carlos Torres in the rotation.

Marcum appeared to have trouble getting loose last night, and was seen grimacing and attempting to stretch out his back during his start.  Even though he was clearly ailing a bit, Marcum tossed six innings of two run ball in the Mets’ eventual 13 inning victory over Arizona.

Per the beat writers, it appears that the Mets’ activation of Germen and demotion of Lutz means that Marcum won’t be landing on the DL at this point in time.  Still, his apparent health issue is something to keep an eye on.
