Jerry Koosman got the start for the Mets and didn’t have it. The lefty gave up five runs on seven hits during his five innings of work.
The Cubs opened the scoring in the third when they plated three runs on a run scoring single from Jose Cardenal and a two run single off the bat of Ron Santo. Chicago extended their lead to 5-0 in the fifth when back to back RBI singles from Carmen Franzone and Randy Hundley plated two more runs.
The only run the Mets mustered came in the bottom of the fifth, when Jim Fregosi delivered an RBI single. New York went down meekly the rest of the way as they lost their second straight game while falling to 30-36 on the season.
