Amazin’ Look Back 6/23/1973: Bucs Top Mets in 10

The Pirates beat the Mets 3-2 at Three Rivers Stadium today in 10 innings. The winning run scored when Manny Sanguillen singled in Gene Clines. Sanguillen’s hit came off of loser Phil Hennigan with two outs. Clines had singled with one out and moved to third on a base hit by Dave Cash. After Al Oliver lined out to center with the runner holding, Sanguillen delivered the decisive hit.

The Mets opened the scoring in the 5th on an RBI single by Ron Hodges, scoring Wayner Garrett who had reached on a error and stolen second. The Mets made it 2-0 in the 6th on a RBI single by Garrett, scoring Ed Kranepool. The Pirates scored in the bottom of the 6th on a double by Willie Stargell that scored Dave Cash. Jim McAndrew started for New York and went 6 2/3, allowing one run. Tug McGraw pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
