Amazin’ Look Back, June 3, 1973: Seaver Leads Mets Past Padres

The Amazin’ offense erupted and Tom Seaver proved to be quite the stopper as the Mets stopped a three-game losing streak, beating the Padres 9-2 in front of nearly 10,000 San Diegans. Seaver was the winning pitcher for the visitors, while Mike Caldwell ended up on the short side for the home team.

Rusty Staub was the big man at the plate for New York, smashing two doubles and driving in a run in the top of the third inning. That run proved to be the difference, adding on to John Milner’s two-run single in the top of the first. Other offensive highlights included Bud Harrelson’s double in the fourth and Jim Gosger’s two RBIs after pinch-hitting in the 7th.
All those runs were more than enough for Tom Seaver, who tossed his second straight complete game and allowed just two runs on six hits, walking two and striking out seven. As good as he was, his ERA even increased from 1.71 to 1.74. Needless to say, the man is good.
