Summers at Shea: Ira Berkow’s New Book About the Mets, Pt. I

Last Thursday, March 14, I traveled down to Jay Goldberg’s Bergino Baseball Clubhouse on 11th Street off of Broadway in Manhattan. It is always a fantastic time at the Clubhouse, and this being a Mets event was no exception. If you have never been down to heaven on 11th Street, I’ve written about it here and here.

The Clubhouse had a very special guest on this evening. Ira Berkow, the Pulitzer-Prize winning New York Times Columnist whose books include Rockin’ Steady: A Guide to Basketball and Cool and The Gospel According to Caseyhas recently released Summers at Shea: Tom Seaver Loses his Overcoat and Other Mets Stories. Ira was a Sports Columnist at a time when reporters had access today’s beat writers could only dream of…or read in his book.

The book is awesome and Ira is a great storyteller, so I will end my typing now so you can watch the first part of the night, which starts with Jay Goldberg’s introduction and includes stories of that very Tom Seaver Overcoat and, of course, Casey Stengel:
