In today’s 5 inning game in Port St. Lucie, the prospect led Mets (with Mike Baxter the only one in the lineup likely to make the opening day roster) beat the more established Mets (with Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Collin Cowgill, Jordany Valdespin, and Anthony Recker in the lineup) by the score of 6 to 2.

Highlights-

  • Travis d’Arnaud went 0 for 3 as the designated hitter.
  • Top prospect Wilmer Flores played second base and went 1 for 2 with four RBI’s, blasting a 3 run homer.
  • LaTroy Hawkins, who was signed to a minor league deal over the winter, got roughed up and lasted only two thirds of an inning.  Hawkins gave up 5 runs, all earned, on 5 hits.  He struck out none and walked none.

Thoughts-

…most spring training stats have to be taken with a grain of salt, especially those from intrasquad games.  The only thing that jumps out from today’s game is how badly LaTroy Hawkins struggled.  If Hawkins continues to get pummeled when he’s facing opponents that aren’t on his own team, we can start to analyze the potential ramifications.  For the full box score from today’s game, click here.
