It will be Anibal Sanchez versus R.A. Dickey today at 4:10 PM in Game 1 of the doubleheader.

Sanchez has been enjoying a career-year, sporting a 4.01 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, and 3.54 K/BB. The 27 year-old has never had better control of his pitches (2.6 BB/9) or dominance (9.2 K/9) in his six seasons in the bigs. His success is backed by a maintainable .318 BABIP, and exciting 3.17 xFIP. With Josh Johnson  out for the season, Sanchez has certainly filled the “ace” void for the fish.

On the other side of the mound is 36 year-old R.A. Dickey. Dickey was slow to start the season (4.39 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, 1.95 K/BB), but has picked-up the pace since (3.26 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 3.20 K/BB).  Considering Dickey’s 2010 xFIP sat at 3.75 (compared to a 2.84 ERA), his 2011 3.72 ERA appears to be a more realistic showing for the knuckleballer.
