GAME 3 PREVIEW: Mets at Tigers, 1:05 PM

Mike Pelfrey (4-6, 4.78 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 2.12 K/BB): Pelfrey has come a long way since the beginning of the season. After posting a horrendous 7.39 ERA, 1.96 WHIP, and 1.23 K/BB in March/April, most if not all fans wanted Big Pelf to be sent down. However, so far the month of June, Pelfrey has posted a 4.36 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, and a 6.33 K/BB. His awesome K/BB is fueled by an incredible 0.81 BB/9 (or just three walks in thirty-three innings). I still think Pelfrey should be traded, but he’s certainly making himself very valuable. (Career vs. Tigers: no record)

Justin Verlander (10-3, 2.38 ERA, 0.83 WHIP, 4.59 K/BB): Verlander is leading the AL in wins and WHIP, and also threw his second career no-hitter in May. His strikeouts haven’t quite matched his amazing 2009 season (from 10.1 K/9 in 2009 to 8.7 K/9 in 2011), but the righty has only allowed an astonishing 5.7 Hits/9. Considering opposing hitters own a measly .178/.228/.291 line against him, I highly doubt the recently roaring Mets offense will do much or any damage against Verlander. (Career vs. Mets: no record)
