GAME 1 PREVIEW: Mets at Braves, 7:10 PM

Jonathon Niese (5-5, 3.51 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 2.17 K/BB): Since May 18, Niese has been studly. The southpaw has posted a 1.34 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 3.00 K/BB during that period, which also includes three wins and a .227/.288/.328 line against. If Niese continues to pitch this way, he will easily be the ace of the staff, though that’s hardly a compliment. (Career vs. Braves: .295/.365/.489 line with a 2.88 ERA, 1.63 WHIP, and 2.33 K/BB)

Jair Jurrjens (8-2, 1.82 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 4.18 K/BB): Sure, Jurrjens has a league-leading ERA, an impressive win-total, and a dominating K/BB, but surely all of those are completely unsupported…right? Well, maybe not. Hitters have just posted a .233/.266/.329 line against, and the pitcher has allowed just 0.5 HR/9. The only possible red flag is Jurrjens’ declining K/9 (from 6.7 to 5.2), however, he has improved control to show for it (from 3.2 BB/9 to 1.3 BB/9). Jurrjens might not maintain his 1.82 ERA, but he could be a dark horse candidate for Cy Young. (Career vs. Mets: .212/.288/.281 line with a 2.68 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 1.45 K/BB)
