Jon Niese (4-5, 3.92 ERA, 1.42 WHIP, 2.00 K/BB): After a rough start to the season, Niese finally saw his ERA sink below 4.00. That’s mostly in part to his superior May, where he posted a 2.97 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, and 2.36 K/BB. The young southpaw is still giving up a lot of hits, so his WHIP is a better indicator of how he’s been pitching than his ERA. Regardless, it looks like Niese is on the right path. (Career vs. Braves: .306/.387/.500 line with a 3.04 ERA, 1.76 WHIP, 2.00 K/BB)

Derek Lowe (3-4, 4.03 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 2.15 K/BB): The veteran sinkerballer has been enjoying a fine 2011, but Lowe has slowed down since posting a .225/.281/.270 line against in his first 4 starts. Also, while Lowe has seen a spike in his K/9 (Career: 5.9, 2011: 7.8), his control has crumbled (Career: 2.6 BB/9, 2011: 3.6 BB/9). The 38 year-old’s May stats appear to be a more realistic, and still serviceable Derek Lowe for 2011 (4.86 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 1.62 K/BB). (Career vs. Mets: .309/.365/.439 line with a 5.51 ERA, 1.55 WHIP, 1.43 K/BB)
