Mike Pelfrey (3-4, 5.00 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, 1.55 K/BB): Big Pelf was a different pitcher in May than he was in March/April. And that’s a good thing. The righty posted a .3.09 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 2.00 K/BB with a .217/.273/.380 line against in May, in comparison to his dismal 7.39 ERA, 1.96 WHIP, 1.23 K/BB with a .341/.410/.528 line against in March/April. If confidence is all Pelfrey needs to be successful, he seems to have found some. (Career vs. Pirates: .283/.355/.394 line with a 3.86 ERA, 1.48 WHIP, and 1.30 K/BB)

Paul Maholm (2-7, 3.18 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 1.92 K/BB): Maholm’s seven losses certainly don’t represent how well he’s been pitching. Despite the lack of offensive support, the lefty has posted a 3.18 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 1.92 K/BB with a dominant .225/.293/.322 line against. The former first round pick has a $9.75 million option in 2012, so he’s picked a pretty convenient time to start pitching well. (Career vs. Mets: .315/.378/.383 line with a 4.60 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, and 1.25 K/BB)
