Mike Pelfrey (3-3, 5.11 ERA, 1.54 WHIP, 1.33 K/BB): Big Pelf’s season was looking pretty grim until his start against the San Francisco Giants on May 5. Since then, Pelfrey has churned out 2 wins while sporting a 2.11 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, 1.60 K/BB, and a .203/.250/.392 against. Whether it was mechanical or mental issues, it looks as though Pelf has–for the interim–overcome them. (Career vs. Yankees: .278/.352/.392 line with a 4.70 ERA, 1.65 WHIP, 1.36 K/BB)

Ivan Nova (4-3, 4.33 ERA, 1.51 WHIP, 1.20 K/BB): If not for the various injuries and lack of signing Cliff Lee, there’s a good chance Ivan Nova would have been be pitching in Triple-A in 2011. However, due to the factors above, the 24 year-old righty is a mainstay in the Yanks rotation. Nova’s main problem is not the hits (9.5 H/9), but rather his high BB/9 (4.1) and sub-standard K/9 (4.9). Pitchers with bad control who can’t buy a strikeout usually don’t succeed at this level. (Career vs. Mets: no record)

Yankees: TBD…
