The rumor is if Ike Davis is put on the DL, it will be Fernando Martinez who gets the call up from the minors. According to Adam Rubin, the Mets have Martinez flying to Denver just in case that decision is made. This is the same Fernando Martinez who is his own walking injury, with numerous leg injuries the past few years.
Martinez who is playing for AAA Buffalo is off to a solid start offensively batting .292 with 3 home runs and 7 RBIs. He has also homered in consecutive games, so the Mets might have him at the right moment. The numbers would probably be even better if Martinez was not forced to spend his usual time on the DL this season. I guess you can say he fits right in with the entire Mets team.
Martinez has spent some time with the Major League club, but never impressed enough to get a regular shot. In 109 major league at bats, he is only batting .174 with 1 homerun. It is a very small sampling, but the lack of power has probably been the biggest disappointment. Additionally, the constant injury problems have always gotten in Martinez’s way, preventing him from reaching his full potential.
Despite seeming like Martinez has been around forever, he is still only 22 years old and the talent is still there. He was once considered one of the top prospects in all of baseball. However, the question remains, can Martinez stay healthy and can his talents translate to the major league level. If he does replace Ike, he will have another shot to impress the organization and fan base that have been extremely disappointed in him up to this point.
