So much for the excitement over top prospect, Jenrry Mejia. Mejia exited his latest outing after complaining about pain in his right elbow. Mets doctors concluded that the 21 year-old pitcher had in fact torn his right MCL, and will be out all of 2011.
Mejia, who was ranked 44th among all prospects by Baseball America, really looked the part in 2011. The righty pitcher posted a 2.86 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, and 1.50 K/BB ratio in Triple-A this season. Even though the Mets used Mejia as a reliever in the majors for part of 2010 (4.62 ERA, 1.69 WHIP, 1.10 K/BB), they reverted him back to a starter, and planned to use him as such in the future.
The Mets will get a second opinion on Mejia’s elbow before putting him under the knife, but his expected return time will be sometime in 2012. The good news is that Mejia is young, the bad news is that fans won’t see him pitch for a little while.
