The New York Mets will finally have their actual starting left fielder back in the lineup for the first time this season. Jason Bay, who will make $16 million this season, endured a rib cage injury towards the end of Spring Training, knocking him out for the Mets first 18 games.
Despite averaging a .280/.375/.519 line with 30 HR, 99 RBI, 94 R, and 10 SB per season from 2004 to 2009, Bay slumped to a pedestrian .259/.347/.402 line with just 6 HR, 47 RBI, 48 R, and 10 SB with the Mets. His 401 PA’s–due to a late-season concussion–were also his lowest total since his rookie season in 2003.
Regardless of Bay’s disappointing 2010, as Matt Kaufman eloquently pointed out, the Mets still desperately need his bat and glove back. Whether it’s enough to lift the Mets out of the cellar remains to be seen.
