Looks like the search for the Mets next GM is over. According to SI.com’s Jon Heyman, the Mets have settled on longtime baseball man Sandy Alderson to run the show in their front office. With the World Series opening up tomorrow and continuing on Thursday, it is likely the Mets will make a formal announcement on Friday, the first off day of the Fall Classic. Former Arizona Diamondback GM Josh Byrnes was the other finalist for the job, but it was clear the Mets wanted to go with someone with loads of experience and contacts.

Alderson, who was the GM of the Oakland A’s from 1983-1997 and has held a few prominent jobs in the Commissioner’s office should give the Mets instant credibility. It remains to be seen how much autonomy he will have to pick the team’s next field skipper. My guess is it won’t take too long after Alderson is sworn in to find out who that will be. Mets making news folks, and it looks like it will be of the positive variety.
