Jose Reyes to Start Season on DL; Daniel Murphy Out 2-6 Weeks

Seems as if a few , oh, minor bits of news from Mets Land broke since my last post on the dreadful state of the Mets pitching staff. The first really comes as no surprise. Jon Heyman is reporting on SI.com that Jose Reyes will start the season on the DL and possibly make his season debut on Saturday April 10th vs Washington. As I wrote a few days ago, this is the right decision. Let Reyes get an extra week or so to get himself back in prime playing shape and make an impact right away.

Now onto the second item of “bad” news. It looks like Daniel Murphy will also begin the season on the shelf. Murphy was diagnosed with a grade 1 MCL sprain in his right knee and is expected to be out of action for 2-6 weeks. Murph injured the knee on Tuesday after planting wrong during a rundown between 3rd and home. Like him or not as a player, you gotta feel bad for Murph, who was about to get his shot to prove himself as a reliable everydayt first baseman. Now, by all accounts, Mike Jacobs (maybe even Chris Carter – who hit his 4th HR of the spring today vs. Florida) will start the year manning the bag at first.

Though the temptation to bring rookie masher Ike Davis back up to take Murphy’s spot must be great, it appears the Mets are going to leave the 23-year old at Triple-A Buffalo for the time being. You know my feelings on Ike. I was clamoring for him to get the job over Murphy, even when Murphy was healthy. Now would be the perfect time for the Mets to reverse the mistake I think they are making and have Ike make his debut on April 5th at CitiField. Looks like that enticing scenario is not to be. Don’t be surprised though, if Jacobs and Fernando Tatis stink up the joint the first few weeks of the season and Ike gets off to a hot start in the minors to see Davis up with the big club sooner rather than later. We could only be so lucky.

As far as the possibility of Jenrry Mejia making the club, check out this morsel from Steve Popper’s Twitter account:

Jerry Manuel on Mejia’s chances of making the squad – “Do I see a way that he does not make the team? Not today.” Interesting.
