Word has filtered out of Citi Field in the past hour or so that Jose Reyes, on the DL since May 26, returned to New York Monday because of discomfort in his right leg. Reyes was evaluated by team doctors today and no prognosis is expected to be announced until tomorrow at the earliest.
The prognosis I am expecting to hear is that Reyes will need surgery top fix his ailing hamstring and that he is done for the year.
To me, this news is not at all surprising based on the negative news that has surrounded Reyes’ rehab for months now. With the Mets five games under .500 and more importantly eight games out of the wild-card lead, there really was no reason to risk having Reyes come back and injure himself further.
Even the die-hard optimists have to have realized by now that this year is a lost one and the devestating news on Reyes just cements that fact a little more.
