Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com is reporting that the Mets have offered David Wright a seven-year contract, worth between $119 and $129 million. This comes shortly after the Rays extended their third baseman, Evan Longoria, for very similar contract terms. This deal, if the reports are accurate, would also place Wright in the same contractual stratosphere as his childhood friend, Ryan Zimmerman. The ball is squarely in David’s court, and it’s time for him to do the right thing and sign to remain a Met until his 38th birthday.

Wright has often indicated that he wants to finish his career as a Met.

He has a very strong connection with the fan base, one not seen in Flushing since the glory days of Tom Seaver. Mike Piazza was very popular, but he was not home grown. Met fans identify with Wright as one of their own. He’s the face of the franchise, the man the fans want to lead the team to its third World Series title. David Wright is also very aware of the conditions surrounding the New York Mets right now. He no longer sees Jose Reyes when he looks to his left. He looks up in the stands and sees plenty of available seats. He hears the buzz about the fans’ lack of faith in ownership. He senses the angst of the fans, the angst that can quickly become the worst thing in sports, apathy.

David Wright needs to do whatever he feels is in his best interests. He has to figure out what is most important to him. Is it the ability to be in the post season year after year? Is it money? Is it stability? Only David truly knows his motivation. But we as a fan base know what he says publically. We hear the interviews and read the newspapers. David Wright talks about how much he loves New York and the Mets fans. He talks about growing up in Tidewater, going to Tides games as a child, and hoping to one day play for the Mets. David Wright’s time to make those words reality is now. It’s right now. He can sign a bona fide offer and remain a Met. He can prove that his words have meaning. The choice is his.

News just broke that the Tampa Bay Rays have come to terms with 27-year-old third baseman, Evan Longoria, on a contract that will make him the highest-paid player in franchise history. The Rays were able to sign Longoria to a franchise-friendly deal after his rookie campaign of 2008, but as he enters his last guaranteed year in 2013, Tampa Bay wanted to make him a Ray for life, which they have successfully done.

Johan Santana was entering this start hoping he could turn around what has been a nightmare-ish four start stretch for the Mets ace. He was perfect through three innings, but unfortunately, they play nine in baseball, and it was the innings after the first three that gave Santana the most trouble. After another lackluster performance, his season ERA has ballooned up to 4.85.
