Recent Mets Backup Catchers

AUTHOR: | IN: Mets | COMMENTS: No Comments

The Mets are set to begin 2012 with Mike Nickeas as their backup catcher.  In 69 Major League plate appearances, Nickeas has hit just .190/.239/.254 with one homer, while throwing out four of sixteen base stealers.  His minor league batting line of .237/.329/.342 isn’t exactly inspiring either, although he did throw out an impressive 38% of runners.  So it seems like the Vancouver native will simply serve as a right-handed alternative to Josh Thole, spelling him against lefties and perhaps coming in for defense.  It’s not thrilling, but isn’t that the job of a backup catcher?  That got me thinking about some other Mets backup backstops recently… Continue reading this post »

This Day in Mets History: Mets Acquire Johan Santana

AUTHOR: | IN: Mets | COMMENTS: No Comments

On February 2, 2008 the Mets traded Carlos Gomez, Philip Humber, Kevin Mulvey, and Deolis Guerra to the Minnesota Twins for Johan Santana. The Mets and Santana then agreed to a six-year, $137.5 million extension (with an option for a seventh season), sealing his Flushing-fate until at least 2013. From 2004 to 2007 (2.89 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, and 4.96 K/BB in 912.3 IP), Santana had not only been the ace of the Twins staff, but had also arguably been one of (if not “the”) the best pitchers in baseball. So to trade four Minor Leaguers for the guy was not only see as a great trade for the Mets, but a flat-out steal. Continue reading this post »
