Tradition Field is no more as the Mets agree to new sponsorship deal with First Data.

The New York Mets have entered into a new sponsorship deal this year that has changed their Spring Training stadium’s name. The deal, which was announced on Thursday morning, is with First Data – a secure payment service – and it will run for the next 10 years. The new stadium name has appropriately been rebranded as First Data Field.

Executives from both the Mets and First Data expressed their excitement in a joint press statement released today:

"“It is an exciting time for our organization to have a world-wide leader in their field such as First Data to be our new naming rights partner,” Mets COO Jeff Wilpon commented .“First Data is going to be a terrific partner of ours for years to come and we are thrilled to have their name on our stadium.  All parties look forward to providing a great environment for Mets fans and the community.”"

First Data originates from Atlanta, Georgia, and they specialize in secure, global payment technologies. I can’t help but wonder if First Data’s execs are secretly Braves fans though.

"“We are proud to expand our partnership with the Mets, a world-class organization committed to winning on the diamond and providing an outstanding fan experience in the stands, whether at Citi Field or at First Data Field,” said Frank Bisignano, First Data Chairman and CEO.While we root for the Mets under the Florida sun, our payments technology will help to power commerce for the Mets and their legion of fans.”"

The Mets have called Port St. Lucie their Spring Training home since 1988. This past November, the club announced it will remain in the small Florida town for the next 25 years, so this deal fits within that timeline for the Mets.

Port St. Lucie is not only the Mets home for Spring Training, but also for their high-A ball squad, the Port St. Lucie Mets.

The new sponsorship deal will likely bring in a good amount of cash to help keep First Data Field in top shape for the next decade. We all know the Mets could use as much cash as possible.
