What’s to make of the Mets refusing to defend David Wright?

David Wright has been in a slump over the last few weeks, and his overall numbers in 2014 – especially his power numbers – are down dramatically. Some of it may have to do with bad luck, and some of it may have to do with Citi Field’s dimensions, but Mets pitcher Matt Harvey feels that something else is contributing to Wright’s poor production.

As Harvey sees it, opposing pitchers have been brushing Wright off the plate pretty much every game, and Mets pitchers have done nothing in response. Said Harvey in the Daily News:

It’s hard for me to watch David keep getting pushed back, I’m not happy about it. It’s not right how guys are being able to manipulate his entire at-bat by pitching him up and in.

It’s tough for him. He’s had to adapt to a different style. And it’s frustrating to watch from the sidelines and not be able to do something about it.

When it would happen once in a while last year, I’d be the first guy to throw one behind somebody’s ear. And I don’t forget. Once I’m back I’ll be excited about getting the chance to help the captain.

Harvey continued:

It’s out there, everybody knows. If guys don’t know by now that something needs to be done, it’s going to continue to happen and that’s not acceptable.

This is a multi-pronged issue.

The fact that Wright is basically getting thrown at every game is unacceptable, and the fact that Matt Harvey – who likely won’t pitch a single inning this year – is the only pitcher who seems bothered by it is glaring.

This is not to say that the rest of the pitchers on the staff don’t have the gumption to take back the inner half of the plate in order to protect Wright. That may not be the case.

Instead, perhaps the Mets pitching staff (without a personality like Harvey currently active) is waiting for someone in charge to tell them to do something about the way Wright is being pitched.

If the pitching staff is waiting for Terry Collins to be the person who will mandate action, they’ll likely continue to wait.

While addressing the issue with reporters on Friday, Collins said the Mets “aren’t getting in a war” and that if Wright “falls on his butt” things will change.

That’s a problem.

Over the last seven seasons, the Mets have been labeled as a team that has very little fight.

That stuff is often overrated, and there’s no need to get into a brawl for the sake of it (the Mets haven’t had a true benches-clearing brawl since 2007).

Still, here is David Wright getting brushed back nearly every night. Here is Matt Harvey saying it’s unacceptable, and here is his manager basically saying that it is acceptable. Here is his manager saying that the Mets won’t do anything to change what’s been happening.

This is yet another frustrating moment in yet another frustrating season. With no one willing to take action, the Mets might actually have to wait until Matt Harvey returns to the mound for someone to properly stand up for their captain.

Well Wright absolutely refuses to stand up for his team mates, so….
Does he demand that ownership brings in help? Does he demand that they have a big market payroll? Does he question the way guys are jerked around and mismanaged?
NOPE. He’s got his last contract and he’s bullet proof. He’s gonna cash fat checks and cruise into retirement.

people like you act like sports is a fucking soap opera. if there’s any other mets fans like this guy reading this, please stop following our team.

Big Mets fan here…love having Wright on the team…face of the organization, stand-up guy…and all that…but the fact is he has NEVER been able to come through in late inning critical situations….even when mere contact was needed, or a sac fly.

I read a lot about how there are no hitters aorund him in the order, but this hasn’t mattered to a large degree….go back to the ’06 NLCS and there were early indications there.

Oh he compiles solid stats year after year, but most of these are in early innings, or late in games already decided. Here’s a guy that’s been smack dab in the middle of the order for NONE years now, and he has ONE walk-off HR, averaging ONE walk-off hit per year.

It’s not a Citifield problem either, until he starts hitting 30 balls a year to the wall that are caught…not the case. he is taking pitches he should simply crush, is guessing wrong, and swinging at unhittable balls. I saw him swing and miss this week on a ball that bounced ON THE PLATE. This is comically concerning.

This might be the stupidest three paragraphs written about the Mets this month, and that’s saying a lot because there is a lot of competition.

Here’s his career numbers in different situations:

      Within 1 run: .300/.385/.496
      Tie game: .298/.377/.490
      RISP: .292.387.469
Man on 3rd, less than 2 out (sac fly situation): .418/.436/642; 30 sac flies, 12 HRs and 294 RBIS (!) in those situations.

You are either a troll, don’t watch the Mets, don’t understand statistics, or some combination of all three.

As I stated…HUGE Mets fan here, and I love Wright, but I’m not afraid to speak the truth. NY media and inbreds like yourself need to take your head out of the multiple places it apparently goes, and put the stats books away…AND WATCH THE GAMES. Lets see his “career numbers” is contested games, late innings, fanvoy.

My $138MM slugger, in the middle of my lineup every single night, HAS ONE WALK-OFF HR IN 8+ YEARS NOW….AND 8 walk off hits in 8+ YEARS. This is a microcosm of what I’m taking about.

Pull up some of the NLCS clips against the cards and watch his AB’s….pull up some of the late season games during the hideous “collapse years”…and on and on and on….

      Sure. Here you go.

      2007, September: .352./432/.602

      2007, last 17 games ("collapse time"): .397/.451/.575

      2008, September: .340/.416/.577

Holy crap, it's like the more we look at his actual performance, the stupider your argument becomes.

In fact, I didn't even realize he was THAT good in 07-08 until I was forced to debunk your ridiculous idiotic argument, so thanks! Today, thanks to you, I learned that David Wright was playing almost at a Barry Bonds level during the Mets' collapse in 2007, and also 2008.

Were you dropped on your head as a child or do you just listen to too much Joe Benigno?

Again with the statistics? Put away your My Little Pony book of stats. He’s a compiler, chinless fanboy.

Have a big person hook up your cable and WATCH THE GAMES. His failures in the clutch cost the team 15-20 games a year, conservatively.

      $138MM man!!!

Am I the only person who doesn’t see where the hell anyone is throwing at David Wright? He has 3 HBP on the season, and two came in April. But everyone is just nodding their heads in agreement like this is some kind of pressing issue. What the hell? Who has been throwing at him? I feel like I’m taking crazy pills.
