Rafael Montero tossed five innings Sunday for Las Vegas

Rafael Montero made his seventh start of the season for Triple-A Las Vegas on Sunday, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits in five innings of work. Montero walked three and struck out six. His season ERA stands at 4.21.

Over his last four starts, spanning 19 innings, Montero has walked 12. The amount of walks lately is an anomaly for Montero, who usually has pinpoint control.

There are a few things that may be contributing to Montero’s relative wildness over his last four starts.

The first, is that the difficulty gripping the baseball in Las Vegas is negatively impacting his control. The second, is that Montero may be nibbling a bit more due to the hitters havens he ordinarily pitches in.

Next up for Las Vegas:

Sunday night’s game was suspended in the seventh inning, and that game will be finished Monday night. After the conclusion of the suspended game, Noah Syndergaard will take the hill for his seventh start of the season.
