The Mets made their second round of cuts Friday morning, optioning both Jacob deGrom and Jeff Walters to minor league camp.
With one group of Mets scheduled to play the Marlins on Friday night and another about to fly to Las Vegas for a weekend set with the Cubs, there’s a chance that deGrom and Walters won’t be Friday’s only cuts.
The 25 year old deGrom came into camp with not much of a chance to crack the roster. He’ll be ticketed for the Triple-A Las Vegas rotation to start the season, but should make his Mets debut at some point in 2014. Whether that comes as a starting pitcher or reliever remains to be seen.
Walters, 26, was viewed as having an outside shot to make the opening day bullpen. Instead, he’ll likely join deGrom in Triple-A, a season after saving 38 games for Double-A Binghamton.
