Fangraphs Unveils Top 10 Mets Prospects List

Earlier today, Fangraphs published their list of top 10 Mets prospects.  To read the entire piece, head here.

Regarding the system as a whole, Fangraphs noted that the Mets possess an “underrated system that has both impressive arms and intriguing hitters. Quite a few of the prospects should be ready to contribute at the big league level within the next two seasons.”

Here are the top 10 Mets prospects as Fangraphs saw fit:

#1 – Noah Syndergaard, RHP

#2 – Travis d’Arnaud, C

#3 – Dominic Smith, 1B

#4 – Amed Rosario, SS

#5 – Rafael Montero, RHP

#6 – Kevin Plawecki, C

# 7 – Jacob deGrom, RHP

#8 – Steven Matz, LHP

#9 – Gavin Cecchini. SS

#10 – Wilmer Flores, IF

The Next Five:

Dilson Herrera, 2B

Michael Fulmer, RHP

Domingo Tapia, RHP

Brandon Nimmo, OF

Vic Black, RHP

There were three things that struck me after reading the list.

The first, is that Amed Rosario is way too high.  He has tremendous upside, but being 4th on the list at the present time seems like quite the reach.

The second, is that Brandon Nimmo belongs in the top 10.  Whether that came at the expense of Rosario or Gavin Cecchini, Nimmo should’ve been in there somewhere.

Lastly, I found the omission of Cesar Puello from the top 15 to be odd.  Yes, Puello is tainted by the PED suspension he recently served.  However, he’s the Mets’ minor league outfielder who’s the closest to making an impact in the major leagues  – and he tore up Double-A last year, flashing above average speed, power, and on base ability.  Puello may not deserve the benefit of the doubt that would’ve resulted in a spot in the top 10, but he should’ve absolutely been in The Next Five category.

No mention of Dom Smith? It’s gotta be a good sign that Fangraphs is so high on him already. I have big hopes for that kid filling the void at 1B sooner rather than later. (And by that I mean maybe Sept. ’16, is that unrealistic?)

Nope not at all. Especially if they let Dom Smith start in savannah next year. The kid has an advanced bat for his age and his defense is very good

It’s interesting that outfielder Dustin Lawley, the FSL Player of the Year, isn’t even in the top 15. It was also interesting that at the end of this season, the Mets managed to leave Las Vegas without a third baseman, just in time for the PCL playoffs. They jumped Lawley two levels to AAA and played him a third base, where I believe he used to play in college. In his brief stint he did pretty well, too. This kid might have a good future.
