Adam Rubin’s Latest Article is Odd

In a report published late this morning, Adam Rubin of ESPN New York writes the following about the Mets’ pursuits of Curtis Granderson and Nelson Cruz:

Despite the Mets publicly acknowledging interest in Curtis Granderson and various reports linking them to free-agent outfielder Nelson Cruz, a team insider severely downplayed to ESPNNewYork.com the likelihood of signing either…asked about the Mets enthusiastically being linked to Granderson and Cruz, a team insider bluntly said: ‘I would not believe everything you read.’

The article isn’t odd because of Rubin’s reporting.

Rather, it’s odd because the Mets publicly acknowledged their interest in Curtis Granderson to the media a day or so ago, only to have a team insider privately downplay it.  Frankly, it makes no sense.

If the Mets are in the business of BS’ing their fans by feigning interest in high profile players (which I don’t think they’re doing), one would think they would tell others in the organization to not contradict that stance to a member of the media.

No matter how you feel regarding what the Mets will or won’t do this offseason, today’s Rubin article has to strike you as absurd.  Again, Rubin is simply doing his job.  However, Mets officials are either intentionally misleading the fans, not on the same page, or purposefully leaking incorrect info to the media.

Welcome to Day 3 of the General Managers Meetings.
