Last Wednesday we had a full house at the Rising Apple Report, as Rising Apple’s Sam Maxwell and Michael Lecolant joined me, as well as special guest Gary Mack of the Mets’ Musings podcast as we discussed the early rumors of the hot stove season.
We began the show as we have of late, discussing the history of the number 45 with the Mets, and some of the greatest players to wear it (a list incidentally led by noted relievers John Franco and Tug McGraw). When Gary joined us soon after, Sam interviewed Gary about his history with the Mets, having followed the team since its inception in 1962. Gary also went into how he developed his weekly Mets Musings podcast (which airs on Thursday nights).
The meat of the show was spent on the opening of the hots stove season, and discussing the various rumors connected to the Mets with Jhonny Peralta jumping out as someone of interest to the Mets, as well as outfielders Curtis Granderson and Corey Hart (among others).
With the development over the past couple offseasons in which the team has shedded payroll (down roughly $50 Million since the end of the 2010 season) and avoided signing big name free agents, it’s fair to say that Mets fans are nearing a fever pitch. The Mets are looking to spend significant money for the first time since Jason Bay was signed after the 2009 season. Naturally, there’s been some skepticism as we’ve heard similar before, but Sandy Alderson is poised to act. Until he does, however, the anticipation will continue to boil over. We discussed how the fans seem to be reacting to the start of the offseason, and how much of their ire is justified.
So listen in if you have time, to 42 minutes of the Rising Apple Report!
