Amazin Look Back, 1973 World Series: Mets Drop Game One, 2-1

The Mets unlikely late-season surge has taken them all the way to the World Series. Today in Oakland, the Mets began their quest for their second championship in the last four seasons. The team’s primary strength has been pitching, and pitching was front and center in today’s game, as Jon Matlack and Tug McGraw held the strong A’s lineup to 2 runs. Unfortunately for New York, Ken Holtzman, Rollie Fingers, and Darold Knowles were a little bit better for Oakland, as the A’s won game 1 by the score of 2-1, and took a 1-0 lead in the series.

Oakland scored twice on the bottom of the third off Matlack, and they were helped by some shoddy Mets’ defense. With two outs and the bases clear after a caught stealing, Holtzman doubled off Matlack. Bert Campaneris then reached on an error by Felix Millan, which allowed Holtzman to score. Campaneris stole second, and was driven in on a single by Joe Rudi. Both runs were unearned. The rest of the day was about Oakland’s pitching. Holtzman, who was 21-13 on the regular season, went 5 innings, allowing one run on four hits. That run came in the fourth inning, when John Milner singled in Cleon Jones, who had doubled with one out. After Holtzman, Fingers pitched 3 1/3 innings, giving up three hits and striking out three. Knowles got the last two outs after Fingers walked pinch-hitter Ron Hodges with one out in the ninth. The Mets had 7 hits on the day to Oakland’s 4, but they A’s were able to parlay bad defense and a timely hit in the fourth into 2 runs to a win the ballgame.
