Amazin’ Look Back – 9/20/1973: Mets Top Pirates In 13 Innings, Edge Closer to First Place

Pittsburgh got on the board first, when a two out error by Mets shortstop Bud Harrelson allowed the Pirates to plate an unearned run and take a 1-0 lead.  The Mets tied things up in the sixth on a two out RBI single by Cleon Jones, but the Pirates snatched the lead right back when they notched a run of their own in the top of the seventh to go up 2-1.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Mets tied things at 2 when a Felix Millan single drove in Ted Martinez.  The Pirates went right back ahead 3-2 in the top of the ninth, tallying a run off Harry Parker when Dave Cash delivered a two out RBI double.

With the Mets down to their last out in the bottom of the ninth, and a runner on second Duffy Dyer doubled to left to drive in Ken Boswell with the tying run.

Ray Sadecki came in to pitch the 10th for the Mets, and held the Pirates scoreless for four innings.

With the score still knotted at 3 in the bottom of the 13th and the winning run on second base, Ron Hodges singled to left field to drive in John Milner and give the Mets an enormous 4-3 victory.

So do you do this using retrosheet only? This was the famous ball on top of the wall game when in the top of the 13th, Dave Augustine hit a ball that looked to be going out and landed directly on top of the wall, caroming back to Cleon Jones who relayed the throw to Wayne Garrett who nailed Richie Zisk at the plate. Any higher, it was a homer, any lower, a run scoring double. Mets fans new they were going to win the east after we won that night.
