Amazin' Look Back - 9/12/1973: Mets Edge Phillies

Today at Veterans Stadium, the Mets beat the Phillies 3-2 to pull within 2.5 games of first place in the N.L. East.

Philadelphia got on the board early, plating a run in the first on a Bill Robinson RBI double to go ahead 1-0.

The Mets evened things up in the third, when Wayne Garrett led off the inning with a home run.

New York plated single runs in the sixth and eighth to take a 3-1 lead, and John Milner was responsible for driving in both.  He smacked a solo homer in the sixth and delivered an RBI single in the eighth.

The Phillies pulled within 3-2 when they plated a run with a leadoff homer in the eighth, but Tug McGraw retired the side in order to seal the victory for New York.  The win moved the Mets to 70-75 on the season.
