Savannah jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning, and led by five after the fifth. Hagerstown starting pitcher Austin Voth walked three consecutive batters in the bottom of the second inning. Sand Gnats Catcher Jeff Glenn sent two runners trotting home with a double. With Voth relieved by Christian Meza, a sac-fly by shortstop Phillip Evans made it a 3-0 game. In the fifth, first baseman Cole Frenzel and Jeff Glenn both hit run scoring doubles off Hagerstown’s second reliever, Justin Thomas to give the Gnats a 5-0 lead.
On the hill, Jacob Lugo (Seth Lugo) started the game for Savannah, and pitched superbly over six full innings. He allowed no runs on five hits, issued one walk and struck out seven.
After Gnats reliever Julian Hilario pitched a scoreless seventh, Savannah tacked on an insurance run in the top of the eighth. Eudy Pina tripled, and Brandon Nimmo sent him home with a sac-fly. In the bottom of the eighth with Paul Seward pitching in relief of Hilario, the Suns picked up a pair of runs top make it a 6-2 game. But in the ninth, Beck Wheeler entered the game for Long Island and retired the Suns in order.
Batting second in the line-up, center fielder Brandon Nimmo was 0 for 3, and is now 0 for 6 in the series.
With the finals knotted up at one, the South Atlantic League Championship Series now shifts to Savannah, Georgia, and Grayson Stadium for games three through five, if necessary. The Sand Gnats Gabriel Ynoa will start Game Three scheduled for Thursday evening.
