Today at Shea Stadium, the Mets opened a six game series with the St. Louis Cardinals.
After starting pitcher Jon Matlack held the Cardinals scoreless in the opening frame, the Mets erupted for three runs with two outs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-0 lead. The first 2 runs came in on a triple off the bat of John Milner, and the 3rd was driven in on a Jerry Grote single.
The Cardinals plated single runs in the third, fourth, and fifth to tie things at 3. The Mets fought right back in the bottom of the fifth, taking a 4-3 lead when Don Hahn stroked an RBI single to left field.
Jon Matlack held the Cardinals scoreless the rest of the way, and the Mets added 3 runs in the seventh inning to extend their lead to 7-3 and close out the scoring. It was New York’s fourth straight win.
