Amazin’ Look Back 7/14/73: Mets Beat Reds 5-2

The Mets defeated the Reds in Cincinnati today by the score of 5-2. George Stone started for the Mets and got credit for the win. Stone went 8 innings, allowing 2 earned runs on 7 hits. He struck out 7 and walked 4. Buzz Caprapitched a scoreless 9th for his second save of the season.

The Mets scored 2 runs in the top of the 3rd, when Felix Millan singled in Bud Harrleson, and Willie Mays doubled in Millan. The Reds made it 2-1 in the bottom of the 4th on a home run by Andy Kosco. Cincinnati then tied the game in the bottom of the 8th on a sacrifice fly by Dennis Menke. The Mets scored 3 in the top of the 9th, when Ted Martinez scored on a passed ball, and Felix Millan then added a 2-run home run. The Mets improved their record to 38-48 on the year.
