Amazin’ Look Back – July 13th, 1973: Mets Split Doubleheader in Cincy

Tonight at Riverfront Stadium, the Mets and Reds played a doubleheader.  Here’s a recap of both games:

Game 1:

Jack Billingham started for the Reds, and out dueled Tom Seaver.  The Reds plated two runs in the third inning against Seaver to take a 2-0 lead.  The first run scored on an RBI single by Pete Rose, the second courtesy of a solo homer off the bat of Joe Morgan.

The Mets answered back in the fourth, scoring a run to draw within 2-1.  However, the Mets had no answer for Jack Billingham the rest of the way, and ultimately fell by the score of 2-1 in the first game of the double dip.

The game opened with a double by Wayne Garrett, a run scoring single by Felix Millan, and an error by the Reds that allowed Cleon Jones to reach first base.  The Mets then plated three more runs – an RBI double from Rusty Staub, a sacrifice fly from John Milner, and an RBI single courtesy of Ed Kranepool.

The Reds chipped away in the fourth to make it 4-1, but the Mets answered right back in the fifth to extend their lead to 5-1.  Cincinnati then plated two runs in the fifth, an RBI grounder by Joe Morgan and a sacrifice fly by Dave Concepcion, to cut the lead to 5-3.

That’s where the score stayed until the top of the eighth.  It was then, that the Mets added two insurance runs on a two run single off the bat of Wayne Garrett.  That made it 7-3 New York.

The Reds fought back in the ninth, plating two runs against Harry Parker.  However, with two outs and the bases empty, Tony Perez grounded out to third base to seal the victory for the Mets.
