Amazin'Look Back, 6/30/1973: Mets Top Cubs, 2-1

The Mets defeated the Cubs today at Wrigley by the score of 2-1. Jon Matlackwent the distance for the win, allowing 1 run on 5 hits, striking out 7 and walking 4. Matlack improved to 5-10 on the season.

The Mets opened the scoring in the top of the third off of Cubs’ starter and loser Burt Hooton. Ted Martinez bunted for a base hit, and was sacrificed to second by Matlack. Willie Mays then doubled to score Martinez. The Mets added a run in the top of the fourth, when Ken Boswell walked, and Rusty Staub singled. George Theodore then hit into a force play, allowing Boswell to score. The Cubs scored in the bottom of the 6th when Jose Cardenal doubled in Don Kessinger. However, Matlack stiffened from there, and held the Cubs scoreless the rest of the way.
