The first place Binghamton Mets bounced back from yesterday’s 10-6 defeat with a winning formula in the rubber match of their three game set against the Trenton Thunder. In taking two of three contests, the B-Mets netted one more game in the standings, and now hold a three game lead over Trenton, and a 2.5 game lead over the Portland Sea Dogs.
Starting pitcher Cory Mazzoni struck out eleven batters over 6.2 innings, and outfielder Cesar Puello powered the Mets with a pair of home runs in route to a 5-4 victory. Cory was charged with three runs, two earned, on five hits, and walked three batters. Mazzoni threw 103 pitches, with sixty-eight going for strikes. He unfortunately came away from the game with a no decision. Meanwhile, Cesar Puello hit a solo home run in the sixth, and after the Thunder tied the game at four in the top of the eighth off relievers Jack Leathersich and Jeff Walters, Cesar Puello hit his second home run of the game in the bottom of the frame to give the Mets a 5-4 lead. After pitching a scoreless ninth, Jeff Walters earned his third victory in relief, but not before blowing his second save opportunity. Leathersich was charged with the tying run in the eighth.
In 181 trips to the plate this season, Cesar Puello is now batting .320, sports a .397 OBP and has stolen fifteen bases. Puello is currently slugging .602 with eleven doubles, two triples and twelve home runs, and has a .999 OPS. Unfortunately for the twenty-two year old, trouble is at his door step. His name has been included among those who possibly face MLB suspensions as part of the widening Biogenesis scandal.
After playing in the series opener, third baseman Josh Rodriguez, 28, has now missed the last two games. He is in the midst of a twenty game hitting streak, in which he has batted .421 over his last seventy-six at-bats, with seven doubles, one home run and seventeen runs batted in. He achieved three hits in a game four times, and had at least two hits eight times.
The Binghamton Mets are now ten games over .500 with a 35-25 record – the top mark in the Eastern League. They are 7-3 in their last ten games. The Mets will play a three game weekend series in Pennsylvania against the Altoona Curve. Logan Verrett is scheduled to start the series opener Friday evening, followed by Rafael Montero on Saturday, and Jacob deGrom will wrap up the series on Sunday. Binghamton owns a 17-12 record on the road.
