Amazin’ Look Back – June 1, 1973: Koosy takes L as Mets lose 4-0 in San Diego


The New York Mets in their road greys lost their 6th game out of 7, dropping the 1st of a 3-game set against the Padres, 4-0, on Friday, June 1, 1973. Jerry Koosman (5-4, 2.78 ERA) took the loss, giving up 4 runs in 7 innings. Bill Greif (4-5, 2.05 ERA) went the whole way, giving up 8 hits while striking out 7. The Mets now stand at 21-23.

Though Koosy got the 1st batter of the bottom 1st, Johnny Grubb singled and Jerry Morales walked. Cito Gaston flew out to right, but then the floodgates opened with 2 out. Fred Kendall singled, Ivan Murrell doubled and Dave Roberts singled, and before anyone knew it, it was 4-0. From then on, Jerry shut the Padres down.

The Mets threatened at many points with a total of 8 LOB, but Greif was in the zone, walking only 1 in 9 innings of work.
