Morning Mets Notes: Michael Bourn Has Other Attractive Offers

So, Scott Boras says Michael Bourn has attractive offers from other teams. If he does, then it’s amazing as to why he hasn’t signed elsewhere yet, as Spring Training for a lot of teams are less than a week away. Danny Abriano covered the latest news and rumors regarding a possible union between Bourn and the Mets, as well as the game of chicken Boras and Sandy Alderson seem to be playing. Like he said yesterday, this situation has been talked about so much over the last few weeks that we’re not going to beat a dead horse here and continually repeat the same information. We’ll only talk about new things as they come about. To stick to my promise, that’s the last I’ll speak of Michael Bourn in this post…scout’s honor.

Unfortunately for Terry Collins, his job status will continually be brought up by reporters, whether he likes it or not. Once again, the manager pointed out that he doesn’t care about not being guaranteed a job in Flushing beyond the 2013 season. Collins also said he’s at the point in his career where he truly loves what he does, and it’s obvious he’s going to put everything he has into this season, and let his contract status play out at the end. This isn’t Terry’s first time around town; he’s well aware that whether the second half tailspin New York went into last season was his fault or not, he knew he wouldn’t be chatting with Alderson about an extension this winter. This team is still in transition, and this year will be a good predictor for the front office to find out if he’s the right man to see their journey all the way back to competitiveness through, or if the relationship should end after 2013. Only time will tell.

Are you one of the fans that gets ticked off when you see the Wilpons paying homage to the Brooklyn Dodgers left and right, but not the New York Giants? Well, the Mets have partnered with the Yankees, Giants, and Major League Baseball to collaborate on a $1 million project that will help restore the John T. Brush stairway, at the old site of the Polo Grounds. This is a fantastic project, and I can’t wait to go and see the steps once it’s complete.

Alderson is continuing to make last minute signings to give the organization some depth in certain areas, and he did so for the outfield as New York inked both Corey Patterson and Mike Wilson to minor league deals yesterday. Just in case you were starting to get upset about seeing these two in Big League camp next week, Adam Rubin tweeted they are heading straight to minor league camp, and will likely head out to Triple-A Las Vegas for the start of the season. I like this move a lot, specifically with Corey Patterson, and Rich Sparago explained why as he discussed the importance of having organizational depth with veteran players instead of being forced to bring up younger players who could benefit more from playing everyday in the minors.

We knew how bad the bullpen was last year, but is it bad enough to bring Ike Davis onto the mound to try and get some hitters out? Jay Horowitz was most likely joking around on Twitter, which is what he seems to enjoy doing the most since making an account, but Dan Haefeli takes a look at what Ike did in his days on the mound, and concluded that it may not be all that crazy. However, all of us were in agreement in last night’s edition of The Rising Apple Report that he’d be better off mashing at the plate instead of making hitters swing and miss. Oh yea, and we talked about that outfielder that doesn’t have a job yet.

Lastly, but certainly not least, only four days until pitchers and catchers officially report. Mets baseball is about to make it’s triumphant return!
