I know it is the minor leagues, so most people do not pay much attention to it, but the high-A St. Lucie team is off to a great start. Despite losing two in a row, they have an impressive 19-6 record. Who said the Mets had no minor league system?
Top prospect Wilmer Flores had a walk off single in their last victory on Friday night. Flores is considered by some to be the crown jewel of the farm system. That title of crown jewel carries some unlucky weight with it, as Met fans have seen many of those so-called crown jewels fall flat on their face.
Scouts around the league are conflicted on just how good Flores will be. Many believe he is not good enough defensively to be a major league shortstop. The Mets think differently, at least for now. We see the Mets going with offense over defense at second base with Daniel Murphy, so maybe they feel the same way about shortstop. Additionally, first and third base are positions locked up by David Wright and Ike Davis. The future at shortstop is uncertain with the Jose Reyes situation. The Mets hope Flores will be adequate enough to play the position.
Flores, who does not turn 20 until August, could potentially be Jose Reyes’ replacement at shortstop, if Reyes were to be traded or leave via free agency. Flores’ performance this season could influence the organizations decision on Reyes (And Money). Flores has gotten off to a solid start. He is batting .303 with one homerun and 18 RBI’s. Met scouts believe he will develop more power, and if he continues to progress offensively and defensively, AA Binghamton will be the next stop.
