Nothing official from the Mets yet, but it looks like our old, double-play machine friend Fernando Tatis will be back in the mix in 2010. Tatis, who hit 282 in 340 at bats for the Mets last season, with eight HR, 21 doubles and a .339 OBP, will be expected to share first base duties with the lefty swinging Daniel Murphy. The biggest implication of this signing is that it likely signals the end of the Carlos Delgado era with the Mets.
All winter, I was convinced the mets were going to find some way to bring Delgado back to Flushing. After his stint [...]
Archive for January, 2010
I finally got a chance to read this piece Ken Rosenthal penned on FoxSports.com. Depressing as it’s contents are, it is a must read for Mets fans of all colors and stripes. Folks, it is safe to say we are looking at one of the top 5 inept organizations in all of sports at this point. Hey, look on the bright side. At least we’re not the LA Clippers and have Donald Sterling as our owner.
So Much for Ben Sheets
A few minutes after my last post, news of Ben Sheets striking a deal with the A’s began popping up all over the Twittersphere. As first reported by Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com, Sheets is on his way to Oakland after passing a physical. He will be paid $8 million for one year. Watch this guy kick ass in the AL West and make Mets fans even more pissed off at their front office than they already are.
Mets fans looking for a sliver of good news these days…..Here it is. This morning in Port St. Lucie, Johan Santana threw off the mound for the first time since undergoing surgery to remove bone chips from his left elbow in August. Johan threw 24 pitchesver about a six minute span. I know it is only January and this is just the first step in Santana’s return to the mound for the Mets but let’s all take a deep breath and go…… ahhhhhh.
Here is a little of what Johan had to say when he spoke to reporters yesterday after arriving [...]
Assistant Mets GM John Ricco is holding a conference call as we speak with the NY Media. From the snippets I have heard while listing to WFAN, it appears that the Mets were aware that Carlos Beltran was visiting Dr. Steadman in Colorado. But they did not agree to the surgery he underwent while there.
Essentially, Beltran did not afford the Mets, the team paying him millions of dollars a year, the chance to consult with him before he went under the knife. Ricco said that Beltran and his agent Scott Boras were aware that the organization wanted the chance to [...]
That didn’t take very long. It appears as if Carlos Beltran, without permission from the Mets, underwent right knee surgery today in Colorado via Dr. Richard Steadman (the inventor of microfracture surgery) and will not be able to resume baseball activities for 8-12 weeks.
There is a load of different info floating around right now, but it does not appear as if Beltran had microfracture. Joel Sherman is reporting that Beltran underwent only a routine scope. Beltran as we recall, missed 70 games last year due to a deep bone bruise in his right knee. This offseason, the osteoarthritis in his [...]
The Twittersphere is buzzing with word that some BAD injury news is about to be announced by the Mets. According to what I read, it does not involve Jose Reyes or Johan Santana. The name being bandied about is the Mets all-world CF Carlos Beltran. I have this sinking feeling right now that we may not be seeing Beltran in action for some time. Not jumping to any conclusions here, but it seems the people in the know here are on to something….something that may prove to be catastrophic for the Mets. Stay tuned.
Mets Pitchers and Catchers
In 43 Days!!!!! The spring training schedule was just announced. Lot’s of work to do before then. In the interim, check out this column by Bob Klapisch calling for the Mets to reconfigure the parameters of Citi Field. Needless to say, as evidence by the two comments left at the bottom of his piece, not everyone agrees with Klapisch. I was stunned to read that 18 more parks yielded less dingers than Citi Field. Just think if the Mets actually had Delgado and Beltran in their lineup most of the season. That number would likely have been higher.
Carlos Delgado Update
Free agent 1B Carlos Delgado played in a game for the first time since undergoing hip surgery in May, going 1-4 in a Puerto Rico winter league game. Brian Costa of the Star Ledger has more details here.
Most of the chatter I have heard surrounding the idea of the Mets bringing the 37-year old slugger back on an incentive-laden, one-year deal has been negative. “That ship has sailed” and “too risky” are phrases I have heard more than once. While I agree bringing Delgado back would be a risk, if the medical staff deems him to be healthy enough to [...]
Looks like it is a done deal folks. According to multiple reports, Jason Bay passed his physical, which was administered this morning in New York. An introductory press conference has been scheduled for tomorrow morning at Citi Field to officially welcome Bay to the Mets family.
There was some trepidation from the Mets about the condition of Bay’s knees and shoulders, concerns first voiced by his former club, the Red Sox, so his passage of the physical was no sure thing. I surmise that the only thing that would have killed this deal is if Bay wasn’t breathing. Can you imagine [...]
