Adam,
I believe one reason for loss of concentration during difficult innings is: the modern day pitchers, especially on the Mets, are worried about running up the pitch counts and getting pulled early. By the 4th or 5th inning they know they are getting close to maxing out, so if they try to pitch too carefully it either causes them to put it right down the middle or get tight and walk a lot of guys. The pitchers don't get the chance to learn to pitch out of jams effectively with maximum focus. These guys all want to go the distance and the threat of an early exit if they get in trouble must weigh on their minds. That is just one possible reason Pelfry is so up and down.
Is there any truth to the rumor that the Cardinals pitching coach is looking to get out of there due to a tiff with management about his son. If so he would be a great addition to the Mets staff as he has rehabilitated a few pitchers on St. Louis. What can you find out.
