The Bell Has Tolled for Church in Flushing

Posted by: Adam Garnett

Breaking trade news here (well as of about an hour and a half ago). The Mets have dealt an unhappy Ryan Church to the Braves for Jeff Francoeur. Well Mets fans, Omar has finally granted your wish and has shaken things up. This deal is certainly not one anyone was expecting and quite frankly (no pun intended) I am not sure what to make of it.

In brief, The Mets get a player in Fracoeur whose ceiling is probably higher than the one they traded away, but whose career has really hit the skids the last few seasons. He can become a free agent after the 2011 season so the Mets hold his rights for a few more years.

Church and Jerry Manuel reportedly did not have the best relationship and there were rumblings starting last year that Church wanted out of NY. Wish granted, Ryan. If not for the terrible head injuries in 2008, I thik this guy was on his way to becoming a fixture in right field for the Mets for years to come. Now is just another ex-Met who will likely become the next Met killer.

I’ll offer a more detailed analysisafter the game tonight.

Another bandaid. Franceur is younger and has had some great seasons. But why did a son of Georgia have such a precipitous fall in his hometown????? The Mets need a wake up call before a major reconstruction. This was not it. Let’s put Reyes in a trade for Halladay. That may wake them up. What do you think, Adam.
